Popocatepetl Mexico

The Popocatepetl Smoking Mountain is located near Mexico City, Puebla and Morelos, in Mexico and is still an active volcano to this day. It has had over 20 major eruptions since the Spanish arrived in 1519. The expedition to the mountain then was led by Diego de Ordaz. Popocatepetl is considered a Stratovolcano, which is a large, steep volcano built up of alternating layers of lava and ash or cinders. The mountain is about 70km southeast of Mexico City where the people there can see it regularly. This mountain is glacier-clad almost all year long. Even so people still try to climb it. It is 18,000ft high and is one of the largest volcanoes in Mexico plus to the Aztecs Popocatepetl is revered as one of their most sacred mountains. See Popocatepetl Video

Iguazu Falls Argentina

At the border between Argentina and Brazil roars one of the largest waterfalls in the world.  It’s called Iguazu Falls, and it pours more than five times the water volume of North America’s closest rival Niagara Falls. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometers of the Iguazu River. The Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat; Garganta do Diabo in Portuguese), a U-shaped 82 meters high, 150 meters wide and 700 meters long cliff, is the most impressive of all, and marks the border between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Two thirds of the falls are within Argentine territory. About 900 meters of the 2.7 kilometers length does not have water flowing over it. The water of the lower Iguazu collects in a canyon that drains into the Parana River in Argentina, shortly downstream from the Itaipu dam. It was originally seen by Eureans in 1542. Panama Canal

In 1914 the Panama Canal opened making life a whole lot easier for sailors as it cut a portal joining the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.  It was thought of many times to put a canal in the South American country of Panama, but was not successfully done until Theodore Roosevelt finally did it so the navy would not have to go around South America.  It is the largest man made canal in the world and a major convenience for importing and exporting via ship. Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro was discovered in 1502 by Portuguese navigators who mistook the entrance of Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a river. After 2 years of bloody conflict, the French were expelled and settlers began to cultivate the surrounding fertile lands. In the beginning of the 18th century, the city's importance and population increased immensely as it became the main shipping port for gold and diamonds.  In 1763, the colonial capital of Brazil was transferred from Salvador, Bahia to Rio de Janeiro. In 1808, as Napoleon's armies began the invasion of Portugal, the decision was made to transfer the monarch and his court to Rio de Janeiro, where he would remain until 1821. With the start of Independence, Rio de Janeiro became the capital of the new empire. See Rio de Janeiro Video

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a Pre-Columbian Inca site located 8000 ft. above sea level which is in the Urubamba Valley in Peru. It was forgotten for centuries until the world’s attention was brought to it by an American historian named Hiram Bingham in 1911. Since it was discovered it has become a worldwide tourist attraction. It was built in 1460, but was abandoned 100 years later by the Inca rulers. It is likely that most of the people that lived in Machu Picchu were wiped out by smallpox before the Spanish conquistadores arrived in the land. Many people originally thought it was the citadel was the traditional birthplace of the Inca of the "Virgins of the Suns.”  In addition to the ruins, this sanctuary includes a large portion of the Pre-Columbian Inca region, which is rich flora and fauna. It was described as "an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization.” On July 7 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the new 7 wonders of the world.
